AktivOrtho™ offers AKTIVBALANCE Program that prevents falls in the elderly
What is Balance?
Balance is the ability to maintain your body’s centre of mass over its base of support. It is achieved by a complex set of sensorimotor control of various systems that include sensory input from vision (sight), proprioception (touch) and the vestibular system (motion, equilibrium, spatial orientation), all working in integration with the muscles and joints of the body. Injury, disease or the ageing process can affect one or more of these systems leading to a loss of balance, which can cause fall-related injuries. A healthy sense of balance helps you to:
- walk without staggering
- get up from a chair without falling
- climb the stairs without tripping
- bend over without falling
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), roughly more than one-third of adults aged 65 years and older fall each year. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths amongst older adults.
How do I know if I have a balance disorder?
If your answer is “yes” to any of the following questions:
Do I feel…?
- as if the room is spinning around me?
- as if I’m moving when I know I’m sitting or standing still?
- As if I am losing my balance and about to fall?
- as if I’m falling?
- ‘light-headed’ or as if I might faint?
- as if I have blurred vision?
- disoriented, such as losing my sense of time and space?

“I learnt about AktivOrtho™ through a friend and the internet. After gathering plenty of information about the facility from my friends, I finally visited it in February 2014. I was in search of an effective treatment for my condition and this led me to Dr. Gerd Mueller (MD).
I was suffering from ‘decreased mobility’ and was facing considerable difficulty getting into a car and doing things like climbing the stairs. Before coming to AktivOrtho™, I had visited a few other physiotherapy and naturopathy centres, but they had failed to cure me completely and my relief was always short-lived.
At AktivOrtho™, I observed that they place more emphasis on the individual’s needs and treatment is customized according to a patient’s recovery. The quality is excellent. I was assigned to Pooja Bajaj who is a dedicated and well-trained physiotherapist. With expert guidance from Dr. Mueller and through Pooja’s dedication, my condition has improved impressively in a short span of time.
Now, I feel more confident while moving around and doing routine daily activities. As a result, my physical actions have increased and I am feeling healthier. The western approach of AktivOrtho™ had certainly benefitted me very much. At AktivOrtho™, the techniques used are totally different and so is the process. Thanks to Dr. Mueller and Pooja, I have now become more ‘Aktiv’. I now have greater mobility”.
COMMENTS BY PHYSIOTHERAPIST
Ms. Pooja Bajaj
“Ms. Jyotsna Diesh came to our centre complaining of general stiffness and myalgia which led to decreased mobility. She was having difficulties lifting her right leg, getting into the car, going up and down stairs and her major issue was maintaining balance when walking on uneven ground, turning or reaching out for things. Her detailed evaluation was done which revealed osteoarthritis in her left hip and right knee. Her right lower limb was short as compared to the left due to polio which was a contributory factor to her overall imbalance. Her assessment revealed weakness in her balance and lower limb muscle strength plus a lack of flexibility in her body.
Our initial approach was to increase flexibility and then strengthen the muscles. She responded well to initial treatment so we then calibrated it further with the balance and functional training program. Now, she is doing really well with gained mobility and balance which she further wants to build on with an ongoing fitness program. She wants to enjoy benefits of a healthy body and mind”.
